Software FAQ
Top up Suica
Suica can be loaded and used as many times as needed.
Suica can be topped up with up to 20,000 yen at ticket vending machines and ticket replacement machines bearing the Suica logo.
Recharge cards can only be used in Japanese yen. Credit cards cannot be used to top up Suica.
Refund
Suica cards issued by JR East can only be returned at JR East stations. Suica cards issued by the Tokyo Monorail or elsewhere cannot be returned to JR East. For more details on how to return, please consult the issuing company.
When the card is returned, the 500 yen deposit will be refunded together with the remaining balance.
There is a 220 yen fee for returning the Suica card, which will be deducted from the total amount. When making a refund, a fee of 220 yen will be deducted from the total amount (results less than zero are considered zero), and then the initial 500 yen deposit will be added.
Refund example
The balance is 1,000 yen, deducting the 220 yen handling fee of 780 yen, plus the 500 yen deposit, the refund is 1,280 yen.
When the balance is 100 yen, the fee minus is less than zero, so the amount is considered zero, and then the deposit of 500 yen is added, for a total refund of 500 yen.
When the balance is zero, minus the fees it is less than zero, so the amount is considered zero, then the deposit of 500 yen is added, for a total refund of 500 yen.
Validity period
A Suica will expire if it is not used for 10 years. For such invalid cards, the following options are available:
Replacing Suica card
Charges on the invalid Suica will be transferred to your new card.
Get a refund
The fee for an invalid Suica is refundable minus the refund fee. The initial deposit of 500 yen will also be refunded.
